Laser Type and Wavelength
There are differennt types and strengths of lasers available for hair removal. Some lasers are more suited to light skin with dark hair, while others are more suited to the inverse. It is the practitioner's job to understand exactly what type and wavelength of laser is the right one for you. Using the wrong type of laser can cause burning of the skin and some ongoing irritation even after the procedure is done so it's important that you only go with a proven and reputable laser hair removal company.
Eye Protection
Obviously, the eyes are particularly sensitive to laser treatment. When undergoing laser treatment on the face and on the upper body you'll be required to wear some form of eye protection. The eye protection that you use should be specific for the type of laser treatment and wavelength that your skin is being subjected to.
Cooling Devices and Infections
Once laser treatment has been applied to your skin, you'll have a cooling device applied. In some instances the cooling device can cause infection. The chances of getting an infection can be minimised (if not eradicated) simply by adding disinfectant to the part of the cooling device that touches your skin. Again, this is something that your practitioner should be in control of.
Ventilation
When hair follicles are treated with lasers a gas is produced that smells very similar to sulphur. This can be toxic to your system so it's important that the procedure is carried out in a well ventilated area.

Generally speaking laser hair removal is very safe when a qualified practitioner is carrying out proper due dilligence. The process is non-invasive and has been used safely on thousands and thousands of people in the past. Problems only really occur when the practitioner makes an error of judgement, which, if you're going with a reputable company with a proven track record, is very unlikely to happen.
If you can find a clinic that has been used by a friend of yours or that you know has been established with a lengthy list of clients then I'd recommend going with them. I'd be very unsure about going with a new clinic that perhaps doesn't have the practitioner experience of other more established outlets.
